The Convento de la Encarnacion was founded by Margrita de Austria, the wife of Felipe 111, in 1611. The monastery has an impressive art collection, including St John the Baptist by Ribera and a polychrome wooden statue of Christ by Gregorio Fernandez. There is also a reliquary chamber holding a collection of saints` bones and other relics. The phial of St Pantaleon`s blood is said to liquefy on the anniversary of his death. The church was rebuilt in the 18th Century after a fire.
