The Palacio Real de Olite was built in the early 15th Century and it was one of the most splendid in Europe. In the palace grounds were exotic gardens, an aviary and a lion enclosure. During the War of Independence it was partially destroyed to prevent it being used by the French. Since then it has been restored to its original appearance and there are beautiful courtyards, royal chambers, halls and towers. Part of it is a parador.
