The splendid Teatro Espanol is one of the oldest theatres in Madrid. It was built in the neo-classical style in 1745 on the site of the earlier Corral del Principe where plays were held in the 16th Century. The theatre was once known as the Teatro del Principe but the name was changed to Teatro Espanol after being restored in the mid 19th Century. It is one of the most important venues for stage performances of dance in Madrid.
