Standing opposite the Palacio Real is the Royal Theatre, Madrid`s opera house. This impressive building, dating from the the mid 19th Century, was renovated in the 1990s. During the Civil War, it had been an arms depot. Inside the theatre, the seating is on five levels and holds more than 1,600 spectators. The foyers contain paintings, tapestries and chandeliers. The restaurant is in what was a ballroom and there is a cafe overlooking the square. International as well as national performances take place in the theatre.
