The Telefonica was Madrid`s first skyscraper when it was built in 1929 as the headquarters of the Spanish telephone company. Its central tower rises to 266 feet and it was designed by the American architect Lewis Weeks. The Spanish architect Ignacio de Cardenas added some detail. Some of the lower floors are used for exhibitions and there is a permanent display on the history of telecommunications which includes old switchboards and telephones.
