The Real Fabrica de Tapies was founded by Felipe V, who brought master craftsmen from Antwerp to Madrid in 1771 to make tapestries for the royal family. Goya drew cartoons from which the tapestries were based. At the height of production, around 250 people were employed. Several tapestries made at the factory can be seen at the Palacio El Prado. One of the factory`s main tasks now is the repair of old tapestries and carpets for the Ritz Hotel in Madrid.
