Velez Malaga is a village in the La Axaquia region a few miles from the coast. Remains of its 13th Century Moorish fortress are still visible on the hill above. The Church of Santa Maria la Mayor was built on the site of a mosque and the minaret was changed into a bell tower. Inside is a Mudejar ceiling. There are also many 16th and 17th Century mansions in the picturesque streets. A weekly market is held here on Thursdays.
