At the highest part of the city stands the fortified palace Alcazar, built by Carlos 1 on the site of a 10th Century Moorish fortress. It features in El Greco`s `View and Plan of Toledo`. The Alcazar was almost destroyed during the Civil War when hundreds of Nationalist soldiers and civilians took shelter in the palace`s underground tunnels. They withstood a siege that lasted two months. The building now houses a military museum.
