The prehistoric paintings in the Altamira Caves were discovered in 1879, and these vivid depictions of bison and horses eventually became a major tourist attraction. The moist breath from the thousands of visitors began to damage the art and admission to the cave is now severely restricted. A replica of the original cave and its paintings with a museum and exhibition explaining life in prehistoric times has opened nearby.
