The Archaeology and Prehistory Museum contains copies and photographs of the paintings in the Caves of Altamira as well as artefacts. These prehistoric caves, about twenty miles from Santander, were uncovered in the late 19th Century. There are also finds from other caves in the region. Also of interest are the Upper Palaeolithic bones carved with animal silhouettes and the spear tips and steles from the Bronze Age. The Roman finds include pottery figurines.
