The Archive of the Indies began in the 16th Century when market traders set up their stalls next to the cathedral. A new home was needed to store everything from the rain, and Felipe II approved the construction of this building which took from 1583 to 1646. From the 18th Century onwards, it has contained documentation from the new world and is one of the most important buildings concerning the history of the discovery of America; here you will find journal of Christopher Columbus journal. It is visited daily by scholars and professors from all over the world.
