The Basilica de Nuestra Senora de Pino is one of the most important churches on the island. According to legend, the Virgin Mary appeared in a pine tree nearby in the 15th Century. Our Lady of the Pine became the island`s patron saint. This fine church has a wooden ceiling, stained glass windows and an ornate Rococo altarpiece. Above the altar is a 15th Century statue of the Virgin Mary. Pilgrimages are made here every year and there is a procession on the 8 September. A room in the church contains the Virgin`s clothes.
