The Castillo de Guzman El Bueno was built in the mid 10th Century by the Moors as a strategic point in the Strait of Gibraltar. Whilst under Spanish rule, it was commanded by Guzman El Bueno. During a Moorish siege when his son was captured and threatened to be killed, Guzman threw down his own dagger for the boy to be killed rather than surrender the garrison. Much of the Moorish structure remains although some of the towers have been rebuilt.
