Santander Cathedral was badly damaged by fire in 1941 but was rebuilt in the Gothic style. There is a baroque altarpiece. The most interesting feature is the 13th Century crypt, the Iglesia del Cristo, which has a separate entrance. It has three aisles and cruciform pillars. Excavation has uncovered the remains of a Roman house. There are also relics of early Christian martyrs, San Emeterio and San Celedonio, the patron saints of Santander.
