The Church of Our Lady of the Conception is one of the most historical monuments in the city. Inside is the silver cross the Spanish conqueror Alonso Fernandez de Lugo placed on the island when the conquistadors first took possession of the island. There is also a British flag captured during the attack by Nelson in 1797. In the church is the tomb of General Gutierrez who defended the city during the raid. Also of interest are some fine paintings and sculpture, including the main altar by Jose Lujan Perez.
