The Ciutadella is a 16th Century fortress that stands on the site of the Greek city which was founded in 776 BC and named Rhodes after their home land. The Romans established a fishing port here. The citadel was built during the reign of Carlos 1, but it was later destroyed by the French. The site retains the layout of its original streets and contains the remains of a later monastery. There is a museum with a visitor centre, an exhibition hall and a cafe.
