The Synagogue del Transito appears to be a plain building, but inside it has a splendid, ornate Mudejar ceiling which is considered the finest in Toledo. The walls are decorated with Hebrew inscriptions. It was built in in the mid 14th Century by Samuel Levi who was treasurer to Pedro the Cruel. Adjoining the synagogue are the rooms of a Sephardic museum with displays of items related to worship, tombs, books and costumes.
