The New Cathedral, built in the early 16th Century because the old one was too small, has Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque features. The main facade is Gothic. The Lisbon earthquake of 1755 caused damage and some rebuilding took place. Visitors enjoy looking for the astronaut and cone carved by the new stonemason in the portal of the Ramos Door on Plaza Anaya. Inside the cathedral is art by the Churriguera brothers.
