Numancia is thought to have been inhabited from the Bronze Age, but most of what can be seen on the site today was built by the Romans. They attacked the Celtic Iberian city of Numancia in 153 BC, but were defeated and it was another 20 years before they conquered the fortified settlement after a long siege. Under Roman rule, Numancia was on the road between Zaragoza and Asturga. A Celtic Iberian house and a Roman house have been reconstructed on the site. The archaeological objects found during excavations are on display in the Numantion Museum.
