The Old Cathedral is entered through the new one and, dating from 1150, it has an harmonious blend of Gothic and Romanesque features. Above the transept is an impressive ribbed lantern, whilst the main altarpiece has 53 panels depicting the life of Christ and Mary, painted by Nicholas of Florence. At its centre is the Salamanca patron saint, the Virgin of the Vega. The cloister was mainly destroyed during the Lisbon earthquake in the 18th Century. There is a diocesan museum.
