The Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso was built by Felipe V in 1731. He was the first Bourbon King of Spain and the palace and garden reflected his nostalgia for Versailles. Everything is in the French style although made in Spain. Some rooms in the palace were damaged by fire in 1918 but they have been restored. Huge chandeliers hang in the many salons with their painted ceilings and velvet hangings. In the gardens are a fantastic series of fountains.
