The Peninsula de la Magdalena is a wooded headland east of the centre of Santander. Here is the Palacio de la Magdalena which was built by Alfonso X111 in the 19th Century. What was once the king`s private estate is now open to the public as a huge park with gardens. There is also a small zoo with penguins. From the headland are splendid coastal views and it is a great place for a picnic.
