Located near the waterfront, the busy, spacious Plaza de Espana is on the former site of the fortification Castillo San Cristobal that was demolished in 1929. In the centre of the square is the Monument to the Fallen, commemorating local people who fell during wars. Beside it are statues of Guanche chiefs. The Palacio Insular, the seat of the Island Council stands closeby.
