The Plaza de la Candelaria is a pleasant, traffic free zone which was once the parade ground of Castillo San Cristobal. The castle no longer exists and in the centre of the square is a lovely Baroque statue of the Madonna holding the infant Jesus and a candle. The white marble sculpture is the work of Italian Antonio Canova. Also in the square is the 18th Century mansion Palacio de Carta with its wooden balconies and patio. It is now the Banco Espanol de Credito.
