The Plaza Mayor is considered one of the grandest squares in Spain. Designed by the Churriguera brothers for Felipe V, it was built betwen 1729 and 1755 in the baroque style. The arches of the arcades are decorated with medallions of Spanish kings and famous personalities such as Christopher Columbus and Cervantes. On one side is the Town Hall. In the past, bullfights took place here, but the square is now a pleasant meeting place with cafes.
