Poblet Monastery
Poblet, Vimbodi, Tarragona Province - Spain

Map
The Monestir of Santa Maria de Poblet was once the most important monastery in Catalonia. Founded in the mid 12th Century, it united the kingdoms of Catalonia and Aragon. The kings of Aragon are buried here. During the Carlist upheavals of 1835, it was severely damaged, but Cistercian monks returned in 1940. Highlights include beautiful cloisters, the dormitory, a Gothic chapterhouse containing abbots` tombs in the floor, the church with its impressive high altar reredos and royal tombs.
