The vast, imposing monastery of San Lorenzo De El Escorial stands in the foothills of the Sierra de Gundarrama. Commissioned by Felipe 111 and built in the late 16th Century in honour of St Lawrence, it was designed by Juan de Herrera. Planned as a monastery and a mausoleum, it took 1,500 men twenty-one years to build. There is a great deal to see, including the basilica, royal apartments, royal pantheon, library, chapter houses and museums. Spanish, Flemish and Italian works of art are on display. It is a World Heritage Site.
