The old Royal Tobacco Factory is now part of Seville University. The massive structure was built in the mid 18th Century when smoking tobacco was fashionable, and thousands of workers, mostly women, were employed. Most of Europe`s cigars were manufactured here. The large workshops and warehouses surrounded more than twenty courtyards with fountains and wells. The evocative story of Carmen made the factory famous in the 19th Century.
