Sa Porta is a medieval gate remaining from the time when the town had a fortress defended by walls. Santanyi was founded in 1300 by Jaume 11 and it was built to protect the south-east corner of Mallorca. It is an attractive, small town with old sandstone houses. The same sandstone was used to build Palma Cathedral. Above the town is the Church of Sant Andreu and inside is a Baroque organ from a monastery in Palma.
