The summer resort of San Lucar de Barrameda lies on the Guadalquivir estuary and it has a fine sandy beach. Christopher Columbus sailed from here on his voyage of 1498. Every August, horse race meetings take place here and for several days there are throughbred races on the beach. They have been taking place since the mid 19th Century. The town is known for its seafood and there is an old fishing quarter with good restaurants.
