Magnificent, medieval Santiago Cathedral, with its soaring twin towers, was an important place of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages. The relics of Christ`s apostle James are said to have been discovered in AD 813 on the site. The present cathedral dates from the 11th to 13th centuries, although the building has an 18th Century facade. Portico de Gloria, with its sculpted figures of Christ and the apostles, was the original entrance. Behind the high altar is a statue of St James. Pilgrims who walk 100kms of the route to the cathedral receive a certificate.
