The Synagogue of Santa Maria dates from the 12th Century and inside are beautiful, white horseshoe arches with intricate carved capitals. After a massacre of Jews took place here the building was taken over by the Knights of Calatrava and it became a Christian church in 1405. A plateresque altarpiece is in the chapel. The building has served many purposes and has been a barracks, workshop and a refuge for women of ill repute.
