Tarragona was an important city in Roman times and the ampitheatre overlooking the sea could hold 14,000 spectators. They came to watch gladiators fighting wild beasts and executions. It has an oval shape and is partly built into the rock. Bishop Fructuosus and his deacons Augurius and Euloguis were martyred here in AD 259. During the sixth Century a church was built on the site and it was rebuilt six hundred years later.
