The Thousand Year Old Dragon Tree is probably the oldest known tree of its species and is closely related to the yucca. It has a peculiar mushroom shape with spikey leaves and a reddish sap, once thought to have medicinal and magical properties. The Guanche people, the first inhabitants of the island, used the resin for embalming. This specimen is almost 60 feet high and has a diameter of 20 feet. It is in a small enclosed botanic garden.
