Built on the site of an earlier church, Toledo`s splendid, huge cathedral took almost three hundred years to build, and is a mixture of styles. At the west end is the high Gothic tower, beneath which is the 16th Century silver and gold monstrance. The carvings on the lower choir stalls depict the fall of Granada, and the high altar has beautiful reredos, whilst the Transparente is an illuminated Baroque masterpiece. The chapterhouse has a Mudejar ceiling, and in the sacristy are works by El Greco and other artists.
