The Valle de los Caidos was built between 1940 and 1958 as a monument to the dead of the Spanish Civil War. There is a basilica hollowed out of the rock and above is a 150 metres high cross of concrete and granite with statues of the Evangelists around the plinth. The cupola has a mosaic of saints, martyrs and heroes of Spain with Christ and the Virgin Mary. At the foot of the altar is the tomb of General Franco. The base of the cross can be reached by funicular.
