Vila Vella is a medieval, walled village on a headland above the bay. It is a National Historic Monument. The walls date from the end of the 12th Century but were rebuilt in 1387 into what is their present shape. Almost the entire perimeter, with its seven towers, is intact. During the 15th Century, a village with eighty houses and a Gothic church stood within the walls.
