The Caixanova Cultural Centre is a venue for theatrical productions, opera, concerts, cinema, dance and also art exhibitions. It first opened in July 1900 when the Rosali de Castro Theatre gave a performance of the opera Alda. For a time the building was used as a warehouse and, after fire damage, a new theatre, built in the Baroque style, opened in 1927. After restoration, it reopened as a cultural centre in 1984. The theatre has seating for nearly 1000 people and there is a cinema. Several art exhibitions are held here each year.
