The Baroque Church of Santa Maria de la Mesa stands in the tiny square of the hilltop village of Zahara De La Sierra. Inside is a Baroque altarpiece and there are Gothic statues. From nearby is a mirador overlooking the Embalse de Zahara which was formed by damming the River Guadalete. Designated a Village of Historic and Artistic Interest in 1983, Zahara is a beautiful place with whitewashed houses and pretty courtyards linked by passageways and steep, winding streets.
