The Hermitage of the Virgen de la Pena marks the spot where the statue of the Virgen de la Pena was found. The statue was brought to the island by Jean de Bethencourt. When Fuerteventura was being attacked by pirates it was hidden but, when it was looked for afterwards, it was not found for almost one hundred years. The chapel can only be reached by foot but it is regularly visited by pilgrims.
