The Lago de Sanabria Natural Park is a beautiful area located in the north-west of Zamora Province. Over thirty glacial lakes lie at 4000 feet or more above sea level. The mountain peaks rise to between 2000 and 7000 feet, and there is a great variety of plants as well as wildlife. The forests are of oak, holly and chestnut. Many walks can be taken in the park, and there is a visitor centre in the ruins of a monastery at San Martin de Castaneda.
