Pedro Facardo y Chacon, the first marquis, built the castle on the site of a Moorish fortress in the early 16th Century. Designed by Italian architects, it had a luxurious Renaissance interior. The building looks complete from the outside but its marble patio was sold in 1904 and is now in the Metropolitan museum in New York, The castle is open to visitors and there are superb views of the town from the tower.
