Penafiel Castle is sometimes known as The Ark because of its resemblance to a ship that has grounded. Standing on a ridge high above the River Duero, it is over 200 metres long but little more than 20 metres wide with a tower in the centre. It was built in the mid 15th Century out of local white stone. Inside there is now a wine museum and you can enjoy superb views from the battlements.
