Salinas de Anana is an unusual place because it came into being because of its saline water that issues from the ground. Collecting salt here is said to go back to the 9th Century if not earlier. The water was channelled down the valley and into evaporation platforms on stilts. Thousands of these were in use in the mid 20th Century but nowadays there is only about one hundred.
