San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is a chapel standing on a spectacular rocky island. Dedicated to St John the Baptist, it can be reached by crossing a causeway from the mainland, then climbing over two hundred steps to the top. It is said that Sir Francis Drake attacked the chapel, taking valuables. There are pilgrimages here in June and July. A steep lane descends from the coast road to a car park from where a further descent leads to the causeway.
