The Silk Exchange, La Lonja, was founded in the late 15th Century as a commodity exchange for the merchants of Valencia. On the outside of this flamboyant, Gothic building are many gargoyles and other ornamentations. The spacious, old commercial hall has a marble floor and its naves are separated by rope like columns. The building has served many purposes including being used as a wheat warehouse, and a hospital. It is now a National Historic and Artistic Building and has been declared a Unesco World Heritage Site.
